Greater Uvalde Emmaus / Chrysalis Community

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The program’s approach seriously considers the model of Christ’s servanthood and encourages Christ’s disciples to act in ways appropriate to being “a servant of all.”

The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with a 72-hour short course in Christianity, comprised of fifteen talks by lay and clergy on the themes of God’s grace, disciplines of Christian discipleship, and what it means to be the church. The course is wrapped in prayer and meditation, special times of worship and daily celebration of Holy Communion. The “Emmaus community,” made up of those who have attended an Emmaus weekend, support the 72-hour experience with a prayer vigil, by preparing and serving meals, and other acts of love and self-giving. The Emmaus Walk typically begins Thursday evening and concludes Sunday evening. Men and women attend separate weekends.

During and after the three days, Emmaus leaders encourage participants to meet regularly in small groups. The members of the small groups challenge and support one another in faithful living. Participants seek to Christianize their environments of family, job, and community through the ministry of their congregations. The three-day Emmaus experience and follow-up groups strengthen and renew Christian people as disciples of Jesus Christ and as active members of the body of Christ in mission to the world.

Chrysalis is a three-day spiritual renewal time.  It provides an opportunity for young people to worship, pray, experience fellowship, be involved in singing, discussion, and creative expression.  The point is to inspire, challenge, and equip young Christians for a closer friendship with Christ and for Christian action at home, church, school and community.  The three days focus on God’s grace, your experience with Christ as a friend, what it means to be the body of Christ, and giving love to a needy world.
Before it becomes a butterfly, a caterpillar goes through a growth stage during which it is called a “chrysalis.” On the surface it may not look like much is happening, but the delicate chrysalis process changes the fuzzy caterpillar into an awesome butterfly with wings of intricate designs and intense colors. The chrysalis process symbolizes how Christ can transform us into something beyond our dreams. It happens when we grow beyond ourselves, opening our lives to Jesus’ love and power.
The word “chrysalis” symbolizes the spiritual growth that is essential between adolescence and adulthood.  That growth is as crucial for youth as the cocoon is the caterpillar. It is that precious time of nurturing a person’s faith for discipleship.
Chrysalis is open to young people of any Christian church. The ages include upper high school students, ages 15-19, who have completed 9th grade.  Chrysalis is a ecumenical event, and is meant to nurture young people’s discipleship for service and leadership with in their own church.
